For the first game of the season the Reserves were looking to put their hard work from the preseason into action and start the campaign off with a win.
From the starting whistle the intensity and skill was unmatched by the Waverley Wanderers, whom soon became the “Waverley Wondering what just hit them”. Roland and Nigel proceeded to wreak havoc in the midfield and after 20 minutes of non –stop attacking a pressure, Samuel Power opened the scoring for the game and the season with a well-placed shot into the bottom corner. He has since stated “I meant to put it there”, the club remains divided. 1-0 to SKOB.
After 30 minutes, the wanders showed their first attacking move for the game, the resulting corner being capitalised on, 1-1. Within no time at all the exact same scenario lead to a second corner, 2-1 to Waverley.
At the halfway mark SKOBs knew what they had to do after some words of wisdom from Coach Phil Skien. Soon after, the broken knee specialist Jared Casey produced his most nonchalant finish to date slotting the ball into the bottom corner out of the reach of Waverley’s giant keeper.
Waverley responded quickly with a scrappy finish almost stopped by new recruit Gorgeous George, 3-2. Not satisfied with a loss SKOBS fought back. Defensively sound with Big AL, Davide, Hanlon and Basso, their strikers now had little hope of increasing their lead. This allowed Casey and Dymond to combine for SKOB’s 3rd. Casey hitting the post and Dymond naturally following up allowing SKOB to equalise again. Casey politely offered to credit the Goal to Daniel despite it already being given to him in the ref’s book.
3-3 the final score with strong performances across the pitch, everyone in the team looking to build on this performance next Saturday.
SKOBs began their State League 4 journey with an away trip to the under 7’s size ground of the Waverley Wanderers.
Eager to build on the hard work put in throughout the preseason, SKOB began brightly, playing the better football of the two sides, and containing any attempt of a forward foray Waverley tried to throw at them. After 10 minutes, SKOBs took the lead through a sublime freekick by Sacha which was turned into the goal off the head of Will.
SKOBs continued to use the ball well and create chances, with a delightful shot from Sacha “Shower Club” Ihasz coming off the crossbar to find the head of Andy Fev who put it passed the Waverley goalkeeper, only to find the referee’s assistant to have ruled against SKOBs for offside.
Waverley then began to find their attacking mojo, using pure pace and long-range passing to eventually be rewarded a dubious penalty for a handball in the box. 1-1.
The half ended with Waverley finding the net through their striker, who clearly gets through more bottles of peroxide than Ian gets through post-game beers, and despite good defensive work by Will, hair-bleach man slotted home with a crisp strike past Dale. SKOBs 2-1 down at the break.
SKOBs began the second half looking to reinstate their intense pressure across the park. The instruction was to win the ball back within 20 seconds, and thats what they did. Despite continuing to play good football across the fun-sized pitch, SKOBs were made to pay for small errors with clinical finishing from their opponents getting out to 3-1.
A late push of attacking pressure could only see SKOBs pulling one goal back through Andy Fev off a corner from the self-proclaimed Assist King Sacha for his 2nd assist to pull SKOBs back to within 1 goal, before the game ended 5-2 to Waverley.
SKOBs can take many positives out of the game and look to build on their performance for a second round matchup against Rowville.
